Obituary for Mike Deal

Michael H. Deal, born September 10, 1952, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Marian (Luehne) Deal and Howard Deal, passed away unexpectedly on October 14, 2024.

He lived in West Salem, where he cultivated a life rich in love and memories. Mike graduated from Logan High School in 1970 and went on to earn a degree from Western Technical College in 1984. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1979 and continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1991. Mike was a jack of all trades, holding various jobs throughout his life before dedicating his career to the Canadian Pacific Railroad from 1998 until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rita Anderson and Shirley Taylor; and his brother, Mark Deal.

Mike is survived by his three sons: Shane (Julia) Deal, Lee (Laura) Deal, and Matthew (Melissa) Deal; his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia “Pat” and Ralph Zielke; grandchildren, Nicholas, Emma, Tessa, Amber (Devon) Miller, Carter, Chloe, and Annabelle Deal; one great-granddaughter, Calliope Miller; as well as a step-great-grandson, Dallas Miller. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mike was known for his kind heart and willingness to help anyone in need. Proud and sometimes stubborn, he was fiercely protective of his family. A true “river rat” from the North Side, he had a passion for fishing, cooking, and creating lasting memories with loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to local veteran’s programs, the Wounded Warrior Project, or St. Jude’s Hospital.

A celebration of life will take place on October 25th from 4-7 at Hunter's Bar and Grill in West Salem. A private Catholic prayer service and military honors will be held for the family.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to his neighbors and friends for their support, the West Salem Police Department, the La Crosse County Medical Examiner, and Fredrickson Funeral Home for their assistance during this difficult time.
