Obituary for Darlene C. Johnson


Darlene Calverna Johnson, 92, of West Salem, passed away October 24, 2024, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem.

She was born September 2, 1932, on the Amborn Family Farm in Mindoro, Wis., to Frank and Bertha Amborn. Darlene attended Browns Valley Country School and Mindoro High School. On October 9, 1954, she married the love of her life, Wilbur Johnson, at First Lutheran Church in Onalaska. Together they shared 70 years, two weeks, and one day.

Darlene worked at Norwest Bank in Minneapolis, Batavian Bank in La Crosse, and at the Northern Engraving Warehouse in West Salem. She enjoyed Jay Buckley Baseball Tours, fishing, playing cards with her friends, reading mystery novels, and working outside on her lawn and in her garden.

Darlene will be remembered as a loving wife, the best mom, and a wonderful friend. She loved taking care of her grandchildren. She was patient, a good listener, caring, and always put others first. She never complained. Darlene will be greatly missed by her family.

Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Johnson; sons, Jay Johnson and Jon Johnson; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Johnson; grandchildren, Jenna Linehan (Tony), Jenessa Kloss, Will Johnson (Kaylee), and Sam Johnson; great-grandchild, Sawyer Linehan; sister-in-law, Marion Amborn; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Amborn and Bertha Nordrum; brothers, Everett Amborn and Thurlo Amborn; and step-father, Norman Nordum.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of St. Croix Hospice for the loving care they provided to Darlene during her time under their care.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem. Burial will follow in Neshonoc Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m., until the time of service, Thursday, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem.
