Obituary for John "Jack" Ebert

John "Jack" Ebert, 96, of West Salem, died peacefully Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at his home. He was born September 10, 1924, at St. Mary's Hospital in Sparta, Wis., to Herman J. and Marion (Smith) Ebert. Jack was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sparta. He attended school in Sparta, graduating from high school in 1942. Jack was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 83rd and 89th infantry divisions in Europe. He worked 36 years in the finance and auction business, being employed first by Thorp Finance and then by Northern Investment Company. Jack was also treasurer for Shelby Insurance Company of West Salem. On April 10, 1965, he married Joyce A. Carter at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in La Crosse. Jack's hobby for over 50 years was raising and racing pigeons. In 1940 the 2nd Army at Camp McCoy used his pigeons for message work during maneuvers. He worked 34 years on the ground crew for the Green Bay Packer home games, (Lombardi to Holmgren). In addition to being a lifelong Packer fan, he enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing. Jack was a member of the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem. Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two brothers, Don (Doris) of La Crosse and David (Sandra) of Alma, Wis.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Thomas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 19, 2021, at St. Leo The Great Catholic Church, 210 Hamlin Street, West Salem. Father Raja Kennedy Arul Samy and Deacon Bob Zietlow will concelebrate. Following the Mass at the church, military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post 51 of West Salem and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Catholic Cemetery in La Crosse. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until Mass time at the church.
