Obituary for Helen E. Smith
Helen E. Smith, 85, of Barre Mills, entered her heavenly home Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at her daughter’s home surrounded by family. She was born April 29, 1937 in Muscoda, WI to Gerhard and Helen Jansen. She graduated from Richland Center High School in 1955. She went on to earn her nursing degree from the St. Francis School of Nursing in 1958. Through her many years as a nurse and volunteer in the hospital, she provided compassionate care to all who needed her healing touch. On July 18, 1959, Helen married the love of her life, Neil Smith. They were married for 57 years and blessed with five children. Helen loved spending time with all her family, crocheting, painting and going to get Starbuck’s caramel frappachinos with her girls. She will be most remembered for her kind smile, warm embraces, and her selfless nature. Survivors include her children Marilyn (Mark) Dahl, Jeff (Brenda) Smith, Ron (Anita) Smith, Rob (Christine) Smith and Julie (Ralph) Lounsbrough; grandchildren, Jason (Amy) Dahl, Amanda (Mike) Pickar, Phillip Smith, Zach Smith, Ronelle (Darren) McVey, Allie (Joe) Groshek, Sam Smith, Paige (Richie) Griswold, Maddie Smith (Dillon), Rob Smith, Jr., Ashley Lounsbrough, and Jessica Lounsbrough; 17 great-grandchildren; 6 siblings, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Neil; parents; grandsons, Gary and Jordan Smith; and 6 siblings. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday July 22, 2022 at St. Teresa of Kolkata Catholic Church in West Salem, 210 W. Hamlin St., West Salem. Msgr. Jeffrey Burrill will officiate. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time mass Friday. On Thursday, at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Jostad Chapel, 121 N. Youlon St. West Salem, a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. with a visitation following until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to send a special thanks to Dr. Thomas Cunningham, her Hospice team and the Cancer Center, at Mayo Clinic Health System La Crosse, for their loving care.
