Obituary for Thomas W. "Tom" Niemeier

He was born August 6, 1948 at St. Anne's Hospital, La Crosse, to William and Lucille (Hoppmann) Niemeier. Tom's father died on February 28, 1948, before Tom was born. Tom was baptized August 26, 1948, and confirmed April 15, 1962, at. St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Barre Mills. On May 4, 1968, he was united in marriage to Karen Kay Millard at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, West Salem. Tom attended one-half day of Kindergarten and grades 1-6 at Sunnymeade School in Barre Mills; grades 7-8 at St. John's Lutheran School in Barre Mills and graduated from West Salem High School in 1966. Tom was drafted into the Army in 1968. He was stationed at Fort Ord/Hunter Ligget in Germany. He worked for Don Groth at the Purina Feed Mill, at Ervin Nuttleman's farm, and the La Crosse County Highway Department for 40+ years.

Tom is survived by his wife, Kay; daughters, Paula (Dan) Steele, and Ami (Tony) Fullwood; grandchildren Emily Steele and Evan Fullwood; a cousin, Dan (Kathy) Hoppmann, who was like a brother to him; nephews, Jeff (Trish) Sprain, Jason (Jen) Sprain, and Matt Berg; a niece, Jennifer Clark; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Pam (Curt) Berg; Kevin Millard, Kathi Millard; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William (1948) and Lucille (2012); his sister and brother-in-law, Roberta (2002) and Richard Sprain (2006); his father-in-law, Harlan (2005) and mother-in-law Joyce Millard (2010).

Being in the hospital for 97 days was not easy for Tom. The staff on the third floor in Sparta were especially kind, and we appreciate the wonderful care provided to him for 74 days.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 25th, at 11:00A.M. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard Street, West Salem. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery, with military honors rendered by Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. A visitation will be held from 10 A.M. until the time of service. Rev. Jonathan Schmidt and Rev. Jean Schmidt will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
