Obituary for Fremont W. Schuttemeier

Fremont W. Schuttemeier, 98, of Eitzen, Minn., was called to his Heavenly home Friday, September 29, 2023 at Green Lea Senior Living, Mabel, Minn., surrounded by his family.

He was born November 18, 1924, in Union City Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, the son of William and Caroline (Meyer) Schuttemeier. He grew up living on the family farm and attended rural country school through the 8th grade. In 1945, at the age of 21, Fremont served his military duty by joining the United States Army. He attended Basic Training in San Francisco and St. Louis, then left from Seattle, Wash., by ship to Korea. After going to Japan, he took a ship back to San Francisco. Fremont recalled the only highlight of his military life was arriving back to the United States and seeing the Golden Gate Bridge all lit up to welcome them home.

Fremont then began his farming career of over 60 years. His passion was raising Registered Holsteins of which he was very proud of and finally raised a cow that brought home a championship.

Fremont found the love of his life, Evelyn Meyer, and they were married on February 18, 1954. Together they raised four children; son, Curtis and three daughters, Barbara, Kathy, and Karen, on their farm in Cabbage Ridge where his son, Curtis, still resides. In 1990, Fremont and Evelyn retired from farming and moved into Eitzen. Evelyn passed away three years later on August 7, 1993. Fremont always enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre, horseshoe tournaments of which he won many trophies, taking many car trips around Eitzen to check the crops and scenery, and spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren for birthdays and holidays. He also loved attending the Senior Citizens every week, loved his polkas and waltzes, and in his later years, he enjoyed the Molly B. Band. Fremont’s favorite TV show was The Price Is Right. He and his wife, Evelyn, traveled to several states visiting relatives and even took a trip to Germany. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and finally, for his 96th birthday, went to a game where his family rented a suite and he got to see the new stadium.

Survivors include his four children, Barbara (James) Mickow of St. Charles, Minn., Curtis (Denise) Schuttemeier of Eitzen, Kathy (Steve) Popplewell of Caledonia, and Karen (Darl) Zabel of Elgin, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Jason (Jackie), Ryan (Amanda), Cody (Ashley), Bobbi Jo and Erik, Angela and Brian, Jaime (Dane), Jose and Cheyanne, Steven, and Kelsey and Greg; five great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Nicholas, Natalie, Colton, and Arya; sister-in-law, Shirley Meyer; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Fremont was preceded in death by his parents, William and Caroline, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Edna Meyer; brothers, Armin (Esther), Walter (Helen), Bill (Arlene), and Elmer; two sisters, Edna and Clara (Guy); brother-in-law, Willard; sister-in-law, Lucy; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 am, Friday, October 6, 2023, at St. Luke’s Church, Eitzen. Pastor Michael McCann will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be from 9 am until the time of service Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred.
