Obituary for Matthew B. "Matt" Schams

He was born April 19, 1982, in La Crosse, to Bernard Schams and Rita (Kopski) Schams. Matt grew up in La Crosse and was a 2000 graduate of Central High School. From a young age, Matt excelled at sports. He played on the Shelby Traveling Baseball Team and won several punt pass and kick competitions.

In the year 2000 Matt met Brady Brown and they have been together ever since. Together they welcomed two children, a son, Devyn and a daughter, Paige. Matt was very family oriented; he loved taking his family on trips to Wisconsin Dells, playing with the kids at the park, and family movie nights.

In his later years, Matt played softball and shot pool with friends and enjoyed fishing and golfing. He will be remembered as someone with a big smile, even bigger heart, a great friend, and someone who was caring (to a fault); if it was in his power to help someone he would do it, even if it put him at a disadvantage.

Survivors include his mother, Rita Schams; father, Bernard Schams; fiancée, Brady Brown; son, Devyn Schams (Kristen); daughter, Paige Schams (Marshall); brother, Scott Anderson (Sarah); sister, Nikole Anderson; maternal grandmother, Carol Netwall; and many special aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Matt was preceded in death by a special cousin, Eleanor McCarthy; maternal grandfathers, William Kopski and Lumpy Netwall; paternal grandparents, Walter and Florence Schams; and other loved ones.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Woodruff Chapel, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m., until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
