Obituary for Steven Scott Schwert

Steven Scott Schwert went to eternal rest with his parents Thursday, January 4, 2024. Steve was born on June 26, 1956 to Donald and Geneva Faye (Bishop) Schwert at La Crosse Hospital. Together as a family they ran the popular and uniquely named “Don’s Seldom Inn” tavern in La Crosse for 32 years from 1959 to 1991. Steve had an 11 year career selling Yellow Pages in Wisconsin and Illinois, and worked 10 years as a Radiographer while living in Springfield, IL along with many other careers. In 1988 Steve married Lisa Morris and later divorced. Although having no children of his own Steve taught “Broken Promise Ministry” for ages six to ten year old children of single parent families at Westside Christian Church Springfield for many years. Steve enjoyed the beauty and nature of La Crosse and the Coulee region, bicycling, bird watching, photography, the Green Bay Packers and a longtime enjoyment for the game of pool and pool cues. The “Schwert” Family name is etched on a park bench memorial in Houska Park. Steve’s name is etched on the “Grumpy Schultz Award” plaque of past Stansfield Pool League Masters Team Champions 1990. Steve graduated from La Crosse Central High School 1974 and received a BSW degree from the University of Illinois – Springfield, and an Associates degree in Radiography from Lincolnland Community College, Springfield, IL. All three names of Steve’s family (Donald Schwert & Geneva Schwert & Steven Schwert) can be found etched forever in granite on the wall of the “Edward Jones Dome” on visits to St. Louis as original Rams season ticket holders. Steve always said, “Take time to look up once in a while.”

Steve is survived by his longtime very special friend Candace German (Springfield, IL) and numerous cousins, special cousin Kim Kvistad (Winona) and her children Krista Bailey, David Kvistad, Laural Kvistad Jr., Dianna and Jerry Merrill (Winter Park, FL) and family, Charlotte Buckingham (Dover, PA) and daughter Mary Wilkinson Wehrs (Plano, IL), Gwen Schools (York, PA), Randy Bishop (SC), Doug Bishop (SC), Ann Bishop Jeffords (SC). Steve was preceded in death by his parents Geneva (1988) and Donald (1994), and special cousins Robert Wakefield Jr. (2014), and Shirley Wakefield (2021). Respected and well-liked Steve would like to give special thanks to his many friends for the many games played and smiles shared. Steve, a good man and good friend, your smile and friendship will be missed by many!
