Obituary for Richard "Dick" Greene


Richard (Dick) Raymond Greene, loving husband, father and grandfather, 82, of Bangor, WI passed away at home on October 2, 2024.

He was born in La Crosse, WI on May 26, 1942 to Raymond and Lorene Greene. Dick graduated in 1960 from West Salem High School. Shortly after graduation he married Judy (Schutlz) who was tragically killed in a car accident before their first wedding anniversary. He managed The Curve-In Lanes, a family business in West Salem, where “Screamer” always had a smile and joke ready for the regulars at the bar. During this time he married Mary (Sieger-Schaller) and had three sons. Following their divorce in the late 70’s he had a 10 year relationship with now deceased Bridget Burt and became a father figure to her children. In 1994, after a whirlwind romance, he married Vonnie (Sheda-Galster) His children, grandchildren and siblings are grateful to Vonnie for her devoted love and care for Dick through four battles with cancer over their 30 years together. Dick gave back to his community as a Community Service Officer with the Black River Falls Police department. He was an expert bowler with many 300 games to his credit. Throughout his life, Dick was a fixture at weekend trap shoots in the Coulee Region and he was a lifelong golfer. He loved sharing his expertise in these sports with his children and grandchildren.

Dick was a devoted husband to Vonnie for 30 years and loving father to Mike (Stephanie), Jim (Miyu), Tony Greene , Randy, Erich (Lori) and Brenda (Chris Matthews) Burt and Garet Galster (Melissa Spindler) and grandfather to Salome and Aidan (Greene), Adelyn, Lauren and Olivia (Burt), Collin and Cooper (Matthews), Ella and Quinn (Galster), Leo and Greta (Spindler) who dearly miss him and the life lessons he imparted to them. His enduring legacy is he was loving, kind and always funny, often intentionally.

He took great pride in being a parent and grandparent, especially sharing his birthday with his first grandchild and visiting them and watching them compete at various sporting events.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law (Raymond and Gert Sheda), sister LaVonne and brothers Danny, Kenny and Steven. Also brother-in-laws Jack Swartz, Mac McIntee and sister-in-law Rita Greene. He is survived by second wife Mary Schaller, sisters Mary Swartz, Kitty McIntee, Raenell (Lynn) Meyer, brother Raymond (Penny) Greene and sisters-in-law Kelly Greene and Joan Onstad. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be a visitation on Saturday, October 12 from 1-3pm at Fredrickson Funeral Home, Bangor Chapel, Highway 162 and Hattan Street, Bangor, WI.
