
Obituary for Eva Louise Farris

She was born on January 18, 1933, in Texas, to Marvin and Elizabeth (Dailing) Gash. She grew up in Brookfield, Missouri. In 1950, she moved to Wisconsin and married Vernon (“Red”) Thompson. They later divorced. On March 11, 1978, she married her childhood neighbor, Virgil Farris.
Eva worked for La Crosse County for over 35 years. Upon retirement, she spent her winters in Comfort, Texas and her summers in Wisconsin. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, a Sunday school teacher, a nurse to anyone who needed help, and a friend to all. Above all, she loved spending time with family and friends.
Survivors are her daughter, Frances Amundson of Rockland; son, Merlin (Dee) Thompson of Onalaska; and Kimberly (Brett Deal) of Black River Falls. She is further survived by ten grandchildren, Melissa (Timm Morissey) Smutny, Heather (Dave) Molling, Matt (Olga) Thompson, Tonya (Lester Bankes) Mikkelson, Shannon (Greg Bell) Amundson, Shane (Stephanie) Amundson, Shaun (Karrie) Thompson, Ian (Kalee) Thompson, Nikki Thompson-Haffke, and Amanda Eckhardt; 21 great-grandchildren: Colgan (Kaylie) Smutny, Kenna Smutny, Abe (Mallory) Molling, Cooper, Tess and Abby Molling, Ivan Thompson, Damien (Lacey) Mikkelson, Deven Mikkelson, and Dalton (Ashley) Mikkelson, Sabrina (Sallie Creech) Amundson, Sabastian Amundson, Zachery, Emery, and Eliza Thompson, Alice Thomas, Oliver Thompson-Gadzinski, Harrison Haffke, and Stevie Eckhardt, and two great-great grand-daughters, Greysyn Mikkelson and Wrenly Molling; along with many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, in 2006; her son, Myron in 2021; her brother; and an infant sister.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 21, 2025, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 359 Leonard St. N., West Salem, WI 54669. A luncheon will follow. The visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m., until the time of service, Friday, at the church.
Memorials are preferred and will be donated to organizations that were important to Eva.
