Obituary for Marguerite E. Thompson

Marguerite “Marge” E. Thompson, 77, formerly of West Salem, passed away on April 14, 2026, at Our Town Assisted Living in Tomah. Marge was born on April 30, 1948, in La Crosse to Clarence and Hermyne Yunk.

Marge grew up in La Crosse and went on to attend college, earning her LPN from WWTC in 1969. While working overnights as a nurse, she put herself through school to earn a second degree in accounting from UW–La Crosse, graduating summa cum laude in 1984. She married Robert Thompson in 1966, and they later divorced.

After leaving her nursing career, Marge went on to own and operate a very successful CPA business in downtown West Salem for many years.

Marge was an avid animal lover and had a big heart for all animals. Her beloved companions, John Henry and Blackberry, brought her great joy. She also lovingly cared for neighborhood strays that became like family, including Fawn Marie, iPod, Sully, Bucky, and many others. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially at Neshonoc Beach and the Experimental Forest in La Crosse, and was often seen taking her boy, John Henry, on many long walks around West Salem.

She is survived by her brothers, Richard (Carol) Yunk of La Crosse and Loren (Cherry) Yunk of Tucson, Arizona, and other family members. She is also survived by her dear friend of over 25 years, Sue Dresen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Hermyne Yunk.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Our Town Assisted Living and the hospice team for the compassionate care and support Marge received over the past few years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Coulee Region Humane Society in honor of Marge. 911 Critter Ct, Onalaska, WI 54650 https://couleehumane.betterworld.org/campaigns/make-donation
