Obituary for Ronald D. "Ron" Meyer

Ron enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957, completing basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He was stationed in Germany and served until he was honorably discharged.

After his military service, Ron worked for Anderson Tree Service in McHenry, Illinois. While living in McHenry, he met his first wife, Eleanor Bruxer. Ron and Eleanor were married in 1960, and Ron adopted Eleanor's four children. Together, they welcomed two more children into their family.

In 1969, Ron and Eleanor purchased a farm outside of Holmen, where they moved with their six children. Tragically, Eleanor passed away from cancer later that same year.

While operating the farm, Ron also began a career at Trane in La Crosse, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.

In August 1980, Ron married Marilyn Sternke, a widow whose husband, Marvin Sternke, passed away in 1975. Marilyn and Marvin had four children together.

After retiring from farming, Ron and Marilyn transformed their barn and chicken coop into Hen House Antiques, which they operated for many years. After selling the farm and returning to West Salem, they continued collecting and selling antiques as a shared hobby.

Central to Ron's life was his desire to grow in his faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ. He and Marilyn were longtime members of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Bangor, where they found fellowship and formed lasting friendships. Through his church, Ron enjoyed volunteering at the Good Steward Resale Store.

Ron is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sister, Charlotte Botcher of West Salem; his children, Dr. Ron (Beth) Meyer of Helenville, Timothy (Mary) Meyer of Clinton, and Linda LaRoche; his stepchildren, Glen (Sandy) Sternke of Westby, Allen (Jeanne) Sternke of Osseo, Barry (Bonnie) Sternke of Mary Esther, FL., and Debbie (Buddy) Spinks of Oakdale, MN.; 32 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eleanor; his brothers, Maynard, Wayne, and Donald; his sister, Dorothy Bryhn; and his children, Colleen Schalk, Laura Ryan, and Larry Meyer. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 20, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, 401 16th Ave. N., Bangor, Wisconsin. Rev. Brock Groth will officiate. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service, with burial and military honors to follow at Farmington Cemetery, Mindoro.
